SiteRapture has just added a background music services category with 25 service providers listed including Muzak, DMX, Trusonic, and others. Background / in-store music services simply provide the technology and tools to deliver music and messages inside business locations such as retail stores, restaurants, hospitals, dentist offices, etc.
Background music is one of those categories that is under the radar for most in the music industry (maybe because it's literally in the background). However, it's an area that we think has huge potential and promise. My former company, Fluid Music, acquired one of the largest service providers in that space, Trusonic, and I was able to take a deep look at the industry dynamics and what made these services successful (or not). With all of the hype and turmoil around digital music and the music industry, the background music space is not even considered by most to be a part of the music industry when in fact it may well be one of the few music models with a solid revenue stream behind it.
